Spring evaluation finished, a highlight of PSU's early 2019 offers

This week marks the end of the spring evaluation period, and on Saturday, camp season officially begins at Penn State. It’s all part of the revolving recruiting cycle, and for the Class of 2019, the process is just budding.

With the time period ending Wednesday for college coaches to visit high schools in order to scout prospects and receive academic transcripts, many of the top targets for next year’s junior class have now been identified. With staff members scouring the country, it is a task that is done with purpose and precision. But it’s only the start.

Prior to Saturday’s first Elite Skills Camp held on the University Park campus, Penn State has extended 42 scholarship offers, according to the Rivals.com database.

With head coach James Franklin entering his fourth season at PSU, and having further refined his recruiting approach, he has begun his pursuit of the Class of 2019 on a national basis. In fact, he has yet to offer a scholarship to an in-state prospect from Pennsylvania.

The state that has seen the most players earn a PSU offer is Texas, which has six. North Carolina and New Jersey are next with five prospects. Virginia has four. Georgia, Florida and Ohio each have three. Maryland, Tennessee and Washington, D.C., each have two, while Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota and South Carolina have had one prospect apiece earn a PSU offer.
