After a weekend of reports and speculation regarding the Nittany Lions' game against Virginia at Beaver Stadium next season, Penn State athletics released a statement Monday afternoon to confirm the change.
The statement, attributed to athletic director Dave Joyner, reads:
"The University of Virginia notified Penn State that it would not be playing the Sept. 14, 2013 game scheduled for Beaver Stadium in order to play a home game on that date.
"We are working with Virginia to re-schedule the game for Beaver Stadium in a future season. We have begun discussions to find an opponent for the Sept. 14 date and expect to make that announcement very soon."
The Orlando Sentinel reported Friday that the University of Central Florida had filled a home-and-home against Penn State for the 2013 and 2014 seasons.
As originally reported by the Sentinel, the UCF game would be scheduled for Sept. 21, 2013 and Sept. 20, 2014, which is not the same date as the Virginia game currently scheduled for 2013.
