Five-star QB Justin Fields decommits from Penn State

The recruitment for the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2018 is open again.

Justin Fields, a five-star prospect from Harrison High in Kennesaw, Ga., announced Tuesday night that he was backing off his verbal commitment to Penn State. He had previously selected the Nittany Lions in December.

Fields recently made a 99-spot leap in the recruiting rankings, earning a fifth star from Rivals.com and soaring into the nation's top 10. With suitors coming from all over to recruit Fields, it's expected that Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia and Tennessee are the schools that make Fields' short list.

In his statement, released via Twitter, Fields said that Penn State "will remain one of the top schools that I would consider."

Offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead was in attendance for Fields' spring game at Harrison in May. Fields had also visited Penn State's campus as recently as for the Blue-White Game in April.
