Film Evaluation: Breaking down Rodney McGraw's first three games of 2020

While the coronavirus pandemic has created havoc with high school and college football across the country, it has created a unique situation. High school teams and school districts are now putting full games on television and subsequently, the internet. While we are normally reliant on highlight films, this year we get a unique glimpse into both their strengths and areas of improvement.

Today, we’ll take a look at edge rusher Rodney McGraw from Elkhart Central High School in Indiana. We’ve already seen some of McGraw’s work during his junior highlight film. If you’d like to check out his previous player evaluation as well, you can view that here.

As with most Penn State defensive recruits, McGraw has an abundance of two things: length and speed.

His initial steps off of the line of scrimmage and his acceleration to the point of attack are impressive. Once he decides to go, he’s gone.

The senior defensive end has done a good job of keeping his speed and burst off of the edge while gaining muscle mass and strength. He’s now listed at 250 pounds by Rivals, a good 15-20 pounds more than his listed weight for his junior season. He looks like it too, adding thickness and power thoughout his lower body. That combination of speed and size is exactly what the Nittany Lions, and every other team in the country, is looking for in a defensive end.

This was one of the major concerns about McGraw’s physical makeup heading into his senior season.
