Facility upgrades approved by board

James Franklin asked, Thursday afternoon he received.

Citing improvements that needed to be made to Penn State's football facilities while traversing the Mid-Atlantic on the third annual Coaches Caravan, the new Nittany Lions' head man's requests were approved at a board of trustees meeting in Schuylkill County.

According to a press release distributed by Penn State, the board approved roughly $2 million for upgrades to the Lasch Building.

"The project includes new carpeting, lighting, furniture, finishes and wall graphics, as well as new paint and seating at the Nittany Lion Training Table in Pollock Dining Commons," the release states. "The cost estimate for this project is $2 million."

Based on Franklin's comments from the Caravan, his requests seem to match fairly well to Thursday's approval.

"To be honest with you, it's everything," he said. "It's nothing really structurally, but it's the indoor facility, our turf needs to be replaced outside and inside. The carpet, the paint, the branding, the furniture, the technology."

Stating that media members should investigate the types of facilities at college football powerhouse programs as well as up-and-coming programs, Franklin expanded by explaining just how much of an impact state-of-the-art facilities can have on a program's success.

"Look around the country to see what people have," he said. "We're going to be able to build a very, very successful program that's going to be competitive in this conference, but it's also going to be competitive nationwide, and I think it's just important for us to be aware of what's really out there. So I'd really recommend you kind of take a peek at those things."
