Lions earn second B1G win
Led by 18 points each from D.J. Newbill and Jermaine Marshall, the Penn State men's basketball team won for the second time in three games Thursday night in Evanston, taking down Northwestern at Welsh-Ryan Arena, 66-59.
Taking a 15-3 lead against the Wildcats to open the game, the Nittany Lions fell behind 28-26 at the 4 minute, 47 second mark in the first half. A Marshall 3-pointer three minutes later retook a 30-28 lead for the Nittany Lions that extended to 34-40 at the half.
Opening the second half on a 7-0 lead, the Nittany Lions bult up a 41-30 lead at the 15:51 mark on another Marshall 3-pointer, only to see the Wildcats climb back again, eventually getting as close as 45-42 at the 11:27 mark and even taking a 54-53 lead at the 6:15 mark.
From that point, a Sasa Borovnjak (13 points, 6 rebounds) layup with 5:55 left to play gave the Nittany Lions a 55-54 lead, which they would not relinquish.
The win improved Penn State to 2-15 in the conference and 10-19 for the season following a 14-game losing streak and 61-day winning drought to open the conference schedule.
Penn State finishes the season Sunday at noon at the Bryce Jordan Center against 20-9, No. 22-ranked Wisconsin.
