Joe Paterno injured at Sunday practice
Joe Paterno was injured at Sunday's practice session.A Penn State Sports Information press release has confirmed Blue White Illustrated's report Monday afternoon that Penn State head coach
Paterno suffered hairline fractures of his hip and shoulder after getting knocked down by a wide receiver -- confirmed as Devon Smith -- running a route during a drill.
The release following our report stated Paterno was admitted to the Mount Nittany Medical Center and still is being observed there this afternoon, but he expects to be return to coaching soon.
"I expect to be back at practice soon. I'm doing fine; tell everyone not to worry about me," Paterno said. "I like the effort I have seen from the squad during our first few practices, but we have a long way to go to get ready for the schedule we have."
The release also said that according to Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli, Penn State's team physician, it does not appear that surgery will be required.
Team spokesperson Jeff Nelson later revealed that Paterno is expected to be released from the hospital within the next 24 hours.
Additionally, according to the release, Penn State's media day, which had been scheduled for Thursday, will be moved.
This latest health scare is Paterno's fourth since suffering a broken leg and torn ligaments in his knee at Wisconsin in 2006. He also hurt his hip while demonstrating an onside kick at preseason practice in 2008 and suffered from intestinal problems last summer that prevented him from making public appearances.
