Scales gives Eugene high marks

Utah represented the third game on the field for the Oregon Ducks, but also the first big official recruiting weekend. One of the visitors was Greensboro (N.C.) athlete James Scales. Duck Sports Authority caught up with Scales to get his view of the game and trip.

When Scales left for his official visit to Eugene, he was not alone. "I left early Friday morning. I came out with my mom. My dad and my brother came out on a separate flight."

The first leg of the journey for the Scales family was from North Carolina to Portland. "We flew into Portland and got to Eugene after noon," Scales began. "When we got there they dropped us off at the hotel and gave us some rest after our long flight. Then at around 6:00 we ate with Coach Kelly, Coach Neal, other recruits like my good friend Ethan Grant. Then they brought in some of the players to talk to us and answer our questions and we all sat there and talked."

Making friends does not seem to be a problem for Scales, as he and another official visitor and future Duck formed a bond quickly.

"Ethan Grant we met when we got to Oregon and we just hit it off," said Scales. "We're thinking about being roommates when we get there. We've been texting back and forth a lot lately. I think we're going to have a long friendship down the road. He's real cool."

Already Scales' college career appears to include current teammate Chris McCain, who wasn't on the trip but plans to make his official to Eugene at the end of October. "I'm really excited to be going to Oregon with my friend Chris McCain. As a matter of fact he's sitting right beside me right now."

Scales reported that his future position coach was one of the primary factors in his decision. "With Coach Neal he's the reason I really wanted to come to Oregon. He will be my position coach, but also I feel we can always talk about everything other than the football aspect of things. We really had some good conversations." Oregon's new head coach was also part of Scales' consideration. "With Coach Kelly he's just a great guy, down to earth. I just enjoyed them."
