Watkins talks Iowa interest
Recently named a four-star prospect by Rivals.com, versatile Ohio native Dareian Watkins has several early scholarship offers on the table including one from the Iowa Hawkeyes. While the 6-foot-2, 192-pound Watkins has not had a chance to visit Iowa City yet, he says he likes what he has heard from the Iowa coaching staff thus far.
"I'm excited about the offer," said Watkins. "I've never been to Iowa before, but I know the Hawkeyes have great fan support. It would be nice to play every game in front of a sellout crowd like they do."
The Hawkeyes' lead recruiter for Watkins is offensive line coach Brian Ferentz. A former player at Iowa, Ferentz has told the Ohio native about some his college experiences and piqued his interest about the school.
"Getting to know Coach Brian Ferentz has been great," Watkins said. "I wasn't that interested until I talked to him. He really believes in Iowa and it's hard not to get excited when a coach represents a school like he does."
On the football field, Watkins does a little bit of everything at Galion High School, finishing his junior year with over 500 yards passing, 400 yards receiving, and 400 yards rushing, accounting for 21 touchdowns in eight games. As a sophomore playing quarterback full time, he threw for 1,256 yards and 16 touchdowns and rushed for 559 yards and 10 scores on the ground.
