Tech may offer Fla. corner
Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas cornerback Joseph McClary has been getting a good dose of attention from within the Sunshine State, but recently Texas Tech entered the mix for the 2012 defender. Indications are that McClary is close to picking up an offer from the Red Raiders.
"Yeah I've been talking with them for a little while and they've told me that they're going to verbally offer me, so I'm expecting that to happen sometime soon," McClary said. "I don't know a whole lot about them, but I've liked what I've gotten to know so far, so hopefully it will happen sometime soon."
McClary is being recruited by assistant coach Otis Mounds, and the relationship is not a new one.
"I've been talking with Coach Mounds and we get along really well. He coached here at our school previously and we had a good relationship then," he said. "I've known him for a while so I know what he's all about. He's a guy that expects his players to work hard and earn everything that they get, and I can definitely respect that. Coach Mounds is like family so I'm very interested in seeing what he's got going on at Texas Tech."
The 5-foot-7, 136-pounder said that he's been hearing from Georgia Tech, Minnesota, Missouri, Florida, and Florida State the most recently, in addition to Texas Tech. McClary intends to give each of his options an extensive look before making a decision.
"I'm probably going to take all of my visits to make sure I've checked out my options first. I won't be in a rush on anything, so it may be after my senior season when I make a decision," he said. "If I find the right fit, though, I wouldn't be afraid to pull the trigger. We'll see what happens, but I'm not set on when I'll be deciding just yet."
McClary also indicated that he wouldn't be afraid to play out-of-state if that's where he feels the most comfortable.
"It really doesn't matter to me whether I play ball in Florida or somewhere else. I just want an opportunity to go in and compete early for a spot. I'm not expecting to have a spot waiting for me, or anything like that. But if there is an opportunity to compete from the beginning, that's where I'd like to be. It's got to be a place that I feel comfortable, but I also want it to be a place where I have a chance to contribute. I'm ready to get started trying to figure out where that place will be."
