Shanks hauling in offers
A solid camp showing during the final session of Alabama's summer camp helped Prattville (AL) defensive tackle Justin Shanks net an offer from the Crimson Tide. Since that time, Shanks has seen his offer sheet expand by a good margin.
"I have offers from South Alabama, Auburn, Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, and LSU," Shanks said. "I don't have a favorite right now. They're all equal, but Auburn and Alabama are recruiting me the hardest."
Shanks plans on visiting each of the in-state rivals in the near future.
"When Coach (Jeremy) Pruitt from Alabama came down, he invited me to their junior day," he said. "I talked with him the first week of December. I know Auburn invited me to their junior day as well. I'm also supposed visit Auburn for a bowl game practice."
Shanks took in a few Alabama games and was particularly impressed with the atmosphere at Bryant-Denny Stadium for the Iron Bowl.
"It was crazy. The fans were really loud," he said. "I knew it was going to be a great atmosphere."
Playing for perennial 6A power Prattville, Shanks benefitted from a weight gain and subsequent move to the interior defensive line, his projected college position.
"For my first year playing inside, I didn't do too bad," said Shanks. "With my weight gain, the coaches moved me from outside to inside this season. I had 9 or 10 sacks with a lot of tackles for loss, too."
Shanks's size has been up for speculation, and depending on where you look, can vary significantly. The 2012 prospect decided to clear the air on his size,
"During the season I was up to almost 300 pounds- I was about 295," Shanks said. "Now I've dropped down to 272. I'm going to work my way back up with good weight. With my height, I'm probably going to be an interior guy. Some camps I'm 6'3, some camps I'm 6'1, some I'm 6'2. I've figured out that shoes off, I'm 6'1.5 and with shoes on, I'm 6'3. I'm actually playing basketball now. It's going good. Our team is doing pretty good so far."
Shanks projects as one of the top prospects from Alabama in a loaded 2012 cycle.
