November 22, 2005 Penn State's Michael Robinson picked up one the league's most prestigous postseason awards this afternoon. The fifth-year signal caller was selected by the coaches as the Big Ten's Offensive Player of the Year. He shares the honor with Northwestern quarterback Brett Basanez, who was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Year by the media.In addition to Robinson, defensive end Tamba Hali was the unamimous choice by the coaches as the Defensive Lineman of the Year and Joe Paterno, in his 40th year at Penn State, was selected by the media as the recipient of the Dave McClain Coach of the Year award. It's Paterno's second Coach of the Year honor in 11 years. Robinson became the third Nittany Lion to earn the Offensive Player of the Year honor. Both Kerry Collins (1994) and Curtis Enis (1997) have previously won the award since Penn State entered the Big Ten conference in 1993. The Lions' tri-captain gained 2,882 yards of total offense this year, breaking the school record which was previously held by Collins. He has also been responsible for 27 touchdowns ? two shy of another school record. Meanwhile, Hali is the third Penn Stater to pick the Defensive Lineman of the Year along with Jimmy Kennedy (2002) and Courtney Brown (1999). The Nagurski Trophy and Ted Hendricks Award finalist led the Big Ten with 11 sacks and 17 tackles for loss. In addition, eight other Nittany Lions were tabbed first- or second-team All-Big Ten by either the coaches, media or both.
