March 15, 2012Penn State true freshman shooting guard, Trey Lewis, confirmed to Blue White Illustrated Thursday night that he is in fact leaving the program after just one season under new head coach Patrick Chambers.
"The rumors are true," he said. "I'm definitely leaving."
When pushed for further explanation, Lewis declined to go into details about his reasoning, but said that it had nothing to do with any possible family issues.
Said Lewis, "It's nothing like that."
Lewis becomes the second Nittany Lion to seek a transfer in two days, joining Matt Glover, who sought to be closer to his native Orange, Calif.
A source explained to BWI that neither player was a casualty of the "carefrontations" that Chambers talked about upon taking the job last June.
Though, the reality is that due to some behind closed gym doors issues that arose with Lewis through the season, the departure is not considered as particularly jarring to the program or Chambers. Lewis had some noted issues buying into Chambers' all-out attitude system to go along with his lower back problems that held him out through much of the Big Ten season.
With Brandon Austin slated to join the class of 2013, Chambers now has three scholarships to work with between the late signing period for the class of 2012 and the class of 2013, which he is likely looking to fill with the potential commitment of Sheldon Jeter, as well as some JUCO options.
As for Lewis, he said at this time he is unsure what his next school will be, though he is planning to finish out the spring semester at Penn State.
"I'm undecided but I'm looking for a better fit," he said. "I'm actually in high spirits. I'm feeling really good about the future."
