Spartans like Detroit OL
One of the players that the Michigan State staff is taking a serious look at for the class of 2013 is offensive lineman David Dawson of Cass Tech High School in Detroit. SpartanMag.com has the latest details on his recruitment.
If Dawson is a new name to some it is because the massive 6-foot-5, 305-pound prospect spent his junior season down in Houston, Texas playing for Cy Ridge High School. Dawson recently relocated back up to Detroit for his senior season and college coaches from all over the country are interested in him.
Michigan State likes Dawson as an interior prospect that can be a road-grading type of blocker. SpartanMag.com was able to get some details from Dawson on the schools he have already offered and the ones that are showing him a significant amount of interest.
"I have scholarship offers from Eastern Michigan, Florida State, Syracuse, Arizona State, Baylor, Missouri and Indiana," he said. "The schools that are showing me a lot of interest are Texas, Texas A&M, Michigan, Michigan State, Texas tech, Notre Dame, Alabama and Florida."
SpartanMag.com recently learned that the Michigan State staff is being very selective at the interior line spots. Dawson, along with fellow in-state prospects Cameron Dillard of Canton High School and Nate Jeppesen of Portage Central High School, top the list of players the staff is evaluating. We asked Dawson about his contact with Michigan State coaches.
"I have spoken and built relationship with Coach Samuel and Coach Staten, Dawson said. "I think Michigan State is a great program and going to make a lot more noise real soon."
Moving to Texas and then back to Michigan is certainly not an easy task, but Dawson is glad he had the experience.
"I had a great time at Cy Ridge," Dawson said. "The coaches down there were great and it was a good experience. I was named 1st Team All-District."
In addition to that honor, Dawson was recognized as one of the top performers at the U.S. Army All-American Combine that was held in San Antonio in January.
Michigan State will be looking to get Dawson is on campus in the near future. Head Coach Mark Dantonio is a big advocate of building rapport with prospects. You can be sure Dawson will be invited to see a spring practice and the annual Green and White game.
SpartanMag.com's Take: Dawson may very well end up being the player the Michigan State staff focuses on and offers. If they do offer, the staff will certainly have their work cut out for them as Cass Tech has been a pipeline for UM. With that being said, you have to recruit every school equally hard no matter what the circumstances.
