Well, the Beavers didn't score on the first drive, a near automatic last year,
which in the end turned out to be a bad omen for the final outcome.

Biggest surprise here was the number of yards put up by Lyle Moevao.
Who would have guessed he would have passed for over 400 yards in his first
game of the season, against a Pac-10 opponent to boot?

Unfortunately, he made two bad throws which directly accounted for nine Stanford
points.

Second biggest surprise would be Shane Morales, who looks to be the
perfect compliment possession receiver to field stretching Sammie Stroughter
and fly sweeping James Rodgers. Morales, who hasn't broken into a regular
rotation during his two prior years in Corvallis, looks like he will become
an important part of the offense in his senior season. He ran crisp routes and
showed the hands we've heard about since his high school days. His 151 yards
receiving against Stanford was 35 yards more than his total Oregon State career
reception yardage entering the game.

Speaking of Rodgers, even a years worth of film on his sweeps still didn't
matter as he averaged nearly 10 yards per rushing attempt….the same figure
he averaged last year.

Biggest offensive disappointment was the inability of the running game to get
established. It was clear that Stanford focused on stopping the run. Several
times they had six men at the line of scrimmage and eight in the box. It appears
that the Beaver coaching staff quickly realized this and started throwing more,
which paid off and allowed the team to move the ball.

Ultimately, a couple mistakes by the QB and a below par run game was enough
to overshadow a 490 yard offensive output.
