December 17, 2006 - These are trying days for the now 7-3 Georgetown Hoyas: In addition to preparing for a game with inconsistent practice time, Georgetown's student body has been engaged in final exams for much of the past week.

That's not an optimal scenario for a team to face, despite an opponent in Winston-Salem State that came into the contest with a 1-12 record, after having played 10 games during the month of November.

Nevertheless Coach John Thompson III's bunch not only prevailed 76-32 in the team's second game of the year at its venerable on campus facility, McDonough Arena last night, but set the record under him for fewest points allowed, and the least since Grambling State only mustered 30 in the 1985-1986 season. Additionally, Georgetown's 44 point margin of victory was the first 40+ final score cushion since 2003.

Despite the lopsided outcome, the Hoyas didn't register on the scoreboard until the opening half's 16:35 mark, and as a result were trailing at the time. Despite Georgetown's use of multiple defenses throughout the first stanza, Thompson et al would only lead at intermission 27-18 at halftime.

Thompson, in his third year, credited Winston-Salem's first year leader, Bobby Collins, for his team's anemic opening half offense. "That team is very well coached. They did a very good job of trying to cut the game. They did a very good job of trying to take away our interior" he noted. "Early on, we were missing shots…we were saying 'Hey, you have to drive more, you have to post up more'. They were taking all that away".
