UConn surprises Boxen with an offer
Defensive tackle Brock Boxen of Beaver Falls, Pa. had held a lone offer from Pittsburgh for several months, but late last week he doubled his total. UConn offered Boxen last Friday, which came as a surprise to the Western Pennsylvania junior.
"They kind of unexpectedly offered, so I'm making my efforts now to check out the school," said Boxen. "A friend of ours, B.J. McBryde, plays there and I talked to him yesterday about it. He had a lot of good stuff to say."
The offer came as so much of a surprise that Boxen had not even had the opportunity to really get to know any members of the coaching staff yet.
"I haven't really heard anything or kept in touch with any coach. They just offered," said Boxen. "I guess Coach Day is coming in this week though."
Boxen, 6-foot-3 and 260 pounds, did mention that he would like to visit UConn once his school year concludes.
"I expect to feel at home and comfortable," he said. "People say you just know once you get there and I want that feeling."
While UConn and Pittsburgh have already offered, Boxen claims that Virginia Tech, Penn State and Oregon are all showing him serious interest now. He hopes to visit all three during the summer.
During his current off-season, Boxen has been working hard to prepare himself for this fall.
"If I play as hard as I've been training, then I'll be unstoppable," he said. "I got more explosive and I'm quicker, which helps once you get past your defender. I'll hit the quarterback quick. I usually base my summer on pass rush technique, so I get the best of both worlds."
Finally, Boxen stated that he is in no rush to make a final decision.
"Maybe during the season, because I want to take my official visits," he said.
